Prosecutor General

The Prosecutor General is Raija Toiviainen.

The Prosecutor General acts as the supreme prosecutor and heads the prosecution service. The Deputy Prosecutor General serves as her deputy.

The Prosecutor General serves as the prosecutor in cases which by law fall within her remit or which she takes over. Among other things, she decides on a prosecutor’s application for leave to appeal and represents prosecutors in the Supreme Court.

The Prosecutor General is also responsible for improving the legal quality and consistency of the prosecution service. She appoints district prosecutors, participates in the development of legislation, issues general instructions to prosecutors and oversees prosecutors subordinate to her.

She may take over a case from a subordinate prosecutor or assign a subordinate prosecutor to a case where she has decided a case is to be brought.

The Prosecutor General brings charges in the High Court of Impeachment.
